Discussion over lunch in High Point

On Saturday, July 10, Uniting NC collaborated with the University of North Carolina’s Institute for the Study of the Americas to host a lunch discussion for immigrants in Guilford County. We gave a brief presentation about stereotypes of immigrants throughout history. Then we hosted a lunch and discussion for immigrants from Africa, Asia, Mexico and Central America. We ate and talked about where we come from and what brought us to North Carolina.

We were encouraged by the enthusiasm for Uniting NC’s mission. And it made us anxious to let more people know about Uniting NC. If you are a member of a group or have a regular gathering, please let us make a short presentation about Uniting NC’s work. We can only succeed with the support of our communities across the state. Discussing Immigration in NC: We Need Your Help!

On April 6, Uniting NC hosted a dinner conversation in Raleigh about immigration in our community.

Business owners, law enforcement officials, lawyers, religious and civic leaders and students — including both immigrants and native North Carolinians — shared their perspectives and their own immigration stories. The event renewed our belief that we can foster constructive, respectful discussion about immigration in North Carolina, and that there is a lot more that unites us than divides us.

We would like to hold many more dialogue sessions like this one, but we need your help. Are you a member of a book club, civic group, church or any other organization that is interested in having a discussion about immigration? If so, please let us know.

Other Uniting NC events have included a well-attended dialogue in Burlington, NC, where we saw firsthand how our community can benefit when we all come together to have a respectful conversation about the things that are most important to us.

Uniting NC would love to work with you to bring similar conversations to your school, church, library,  etc.
